Discount Internet Services

Amid the COVID-19 emergency, Comcast is taking immediate steps to help connect low-income families to the Internet at home. New Internet Essentials customers will receive two free months of Internet service, which is available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month plus tax.

You may qualify if you:

Live in an area where Comcast Internet Service is available.
Are eligible for public assistance programs like the National School Lunch Program, housing assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, and others.
Have not subscribed to Comcast Internet within the last 90 days.
Have no outstanding debt to Comcast that is less than one year old. Households who owe money to Comcast may still qualify if approved by 12/31/20.

Wifi Hot Spots

Comcast is offering free access to its Xfinity WiFi hot spots for everyone, including non-subscribers, for the 60 days. It’s also providing unlimited data to its customers for no extra charge and is not disconnecting internet service or charging late fees for customers who say they can’t pay their bills. The company is also providing 60 days of free basic internet service to new customers.

The cable, phone and media giant is offering internet access for qualifying limited income households at $10 a month or less through their Access from AT&T program.

Like Comcast, AT&T is also providing free access to its public WiFi hot spots. The company also said its consumer home internet wireline customers and fixed wireless internet customers would receive unlimited data and won’t see overage charges through December 31.

Fios customers who qualify for the low-income Lifeline discount program will receive a $20 per month discount on their home internet service for as long as they remain eligible for the program.

The mobile phone service provider is providing unlimited data to all current customers who have plans with data for the next 60 days. It will also provide additional data to mobile hotspot users.

Find Low-Cost Internet and Affordable Computers in Your Area

For low-income households in need of computers or affordable internet, visit everyoneon.org to see what is offered in your area.

Parking lot 19, on the East side of Rhodes Garret Hamiel(accessible via S Locust St. from E University Ave.), and Parking Lot 57, on the West side of the Computer Center(accessible via Sweet Ave. from Stewart St.) have outdoor wireless available for those who need internet and can study from inside their cars.

Free Wi-Fi at NMSU Extension Offices, Agricultural Science Centers

NMSU Extension offices, Agricultural Science Centers offer free Wi-Fi access to rural students

The NMSU College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences is offering free Wi-Fi access for students through its many Cooperative Extension Offices and Agricultural Experiment Stations throughout the state. Rural students who need access to a wi-fi network for classes may visit CES and AES locations in their counties to access the Wi-Fi signal on their devices from the parking lot while using recommended social distancing practices. Most locations already have Wi-Fi access up and running, and more are expected to be online soon.

The guest password for the network at each location is Aggies#1.

Devices that have already been registered on an NMSU campus should be able to connect to the network. Devices that haven’t previously been connected on campus will need to be registered at netreg.nmsu.edu. For assistance with registering a device or accessing the wi-fi network, contact aces_help@nmsu.edu or call 575-646-3305.

The following emergency offerings by Internet Service Providers was compiled by the NM Public Education Department (PED) and the Homework Gap Team (PED, Department of Information Technology, State Library, Public Schools Facility Authority, Santa Fe Indian School, and the Navajo Nation) through a request to New Mexico Internet Service Providers (ISP) for their emergency offerings during the Covid19 pandemic. In addition, the “Team” also has included national offerings specific to New Mexico that are being compiled by the State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA).

General Information & Help Resources

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. Available for Windows, Mac and iOS.

Zoom is an easy-to-use video conferencing tool that allows you to meet online with your coworkers, with or without video. You can even screen-share with Zoom.

Available Software & Downloads

Office 365 is Microsoft’s suite of software tools that include Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc., that NMSU provides free of charge to NMSU students, faculty, and staff.

For instructions on downloading Office 365, see Office 365 Education Benefit or Microsoft Office 365.

NMSU provides free, or deeply discounted, software to the NMSU community. You can find the list of software available for download at software.nmsu.edu.

Remote Access to NMSU Data and Systems

If you’re working from home and need to access files or systems that require a connection to NMSU’s network.

Access NMSU data and systems from home using the VPN

For access to NMSU data or systems, you’ll need to use NMSU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPN allows you to create a secure network path from your home computer across the internet to NMSU’s data and systems. Once you download and login with the VPN software, you simply open your browser for access to the data and systems. VPN is available for download at: vpn.nmsu.edu.

VMware Horizon allows users to access on-campus desktops/software from off-campus. For more information on accessing NMSU’s virtual lab, see VMware Documentation.

Note: Up to 100 lab virtual machines can run concurrently. If you receive the following error message, it means they are all in use, and you’ll have to try again later.

The Aggie Health and Wellness Center provides counseling services with a staff of counselors and psychologists that are here to assist students with crisis, mental health, and personal growth and well-being issues. Services are free and confidential to NMSU main campus students. The Health and Wellness Center strives to create a safe and affirming climate where students can feel comfortable exploring the importance of their identity and life experiences regarding diversity and how this might relate to the issues and concerns students may want to address in counseling.

The Mission of the Aggie Cupboard is to provide free supplementary food assistance to the NMSU community, including Las Cruces and DACC students, faculty, and staff. They strive to create an atmosphere of care, concern, and support for those who may be struggling with food insecurity, and are working towards educating on the prevalence of food insecurity and hunger experienced by the NMSU community.
