The <meta name='description'> element provides a summary of a page's contentthat search engines include in search results. A high-quality, unique metadescription makes your page appear more relevant and can increase your searchtraffic.

How the Lighthouse meta description audit fails #

Meta description. It sounds like something from another dimension. But actually, it’s super simple. A meta description is the approximately 160 character summary that appears below your URL on a search engine or anywhere that your website is shared. Meta descriptions are the short snippets that appear on search results pages like Google and Bing. You can customize them to better describe each page, drawing in new users and making your search results stand out from competing websites. Adding a meta description can be as easy as filling out a box or inserting a line of code. Meta descriptions are intended to provide users with a snippet of what they can expect to find by clicking on your website. Meta descriptions appear beneath a websites URL in search engine results pages. In this example, we have highlighted the meta-description in yellow.

How to add a meta description #

Add a <meta name=description> element to the <head> of each of your pages:

  • Make descriptions clear and concise. Avoid vague descriptions like 'Home.'
